The Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg - founded in 1767 by the Patriotic Society as Germany's first vocational school - officially holds the status of an artistic-scientific academy since 1970. Its teaching approach is highly experimental and includes, next to the interdisciplinary practice, numerous cooperations with other institutions. In the design study course, basic knowledge and abilities are conveyed in order to solve general artistic and technical design problems independently and creatively.

Prof. Lutz Pankow: "The invitation to the VisionWorks Award has enriched our offered courses of study. As we at the HFBK mainly work on self-imposed questions, the competition with its particular structure was a new experience for everybody involved. Two aspects were perceived as especially positive by the students: On the one hand the possibility of obtaining an insight into the development of materials and processes in a major corporation, and on the other hand of evaluating one's own position in comparison to other international design academies."
